Smiling Bear is an independent theatre collective led by playwright Anthony Nocera.

We develop works that are cute, unexpected and dangerous. We tackle big ideas with a smile and tell stories with sharp teeth.
We like to have fun and make theatre now and then - sometimes we go into hibernation.

In 2026, we’ll be presenting the world premiere season of Log Boy as part of State Theatre Company South Australia’s SPARK program.

Smiling Bear is named after Jamie Anderson, Anthony’s late-partner and bear. There was no one that Jamie couldn’t charm with his smile or incredible brain.

We live and make work on Kaurna Country and consider it an honour to tell stories on the lands of the oldest living storytelling culture on the planet. We respect Elders past and present. This always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
